Humanities

Junior High Humanities is a two-year alternating curriculum that integrates language arts and social studies. One year is focused on United States History and the one year is focused on Global Studies. The courses follow California state standards for both English and Social Studies, supplemented with Oak Grove’s unique framework of student expectations expressed in The Art of Living & Learning. Oak Grove uses the 6 Traits program for writing and writing workshop. Students explore the process of the writing cycle, drafting, revising, editing and publishing their work. They learn the conventions of writing, including grammar and writing mechanics. Students engage in independent research projects where they can investigate topics deeply and present these to their classmates and teacher.
The goal of the JH Humanities program is to:
- Enhance students’ ability to think clearly and critically and communicate effectively
- Increase comprehension and command of language
- Expose students to a diversity of both cultural and universal values
- Instill an appreciative regard for reading, thinking and expression
- Enable students to write competently and confidently
- Promote an understanding of human cultural history
- Instill an appreciation of global environmental issues
- Promote an understanding of self through the study of others, past and present
