Progressive Education at Oak Grove School - Junior High Project-Based Learning in Mechanics

At Oak Grove School we feel passionately that students need an approach to education that captivates student interest and helps them develop the life-long practices of self-discipline, hard work, commitment, and stick-to-itiveness as well as those more subtle practices of looking at problems from multiple perspectives, grappling with ambiguity and recognizing that the truth of things needs deep and abiding exploration. For that reason our curriculum offers opportunities for inquiry and project-based learning and we augment traditional testing with authentic assessment practices such as portfolios, demonstrations of learning and exhibitions. Our teachers are facilitators and coaches, emphasizing depth over coverage, and our students are empowered with self-responsibility and ownership of their own learning. On Wednesday, February 21st, Oak Grove School held its annual Fundraising Breakfast Tea. The theme of this year's event was To Simply Attend. What does it mean to truly attend to something, to make every part of yourself aware of something else, or just to truly perceive what is around you? And, how does that practice of attention fundamentally change how we see, feel, and act... how does it change our world? This Week at Oak Grove School

Thank you to all the families who contributed to the teacher and staff appreciation this past week. There were so many affectionate surprises both in the classrooms and in the Main House... each day affirming the richness of our community. It was also bike-to-school week, which reminded many of us how much fun it is to feel the breeze on our way to school. Some classes returned from their camping trips and others are preparing to depart... there is a lot of adventure as we near the end of the school year. Finally, we applaud the Junior High class for their amazing Spring Concert and Art Show, as well as the High School Theatre Arts class for their outstanding Theatre Tapas performances this past weekend.

2012 State of the School Address

Greetings from Oak Grove School as we enter into our second week of spring break. I hope you are all enjoying some relaxing time with family. Here on the campus, like elsewhere in Ojai, spring has definitely sprung - the grasses are lushly green, the first blossoms are humming with bees and the sky is full of birdsong.
